What Kotlin Can Graciously Steal from Scala (Englisch)
- 16. September 2024
- 12:00–12:45 Uhr
Detailed talk description
Scala inspired the creation of Kotlin as a more expressive language than Java while still being pragmatic. In this talk, Daniel will talk about Scala features that Kotlin has adopted with great success, and show how we, as Kotlin developers, can write expressive code without obfuscating by conciseness.
You will learn how Kotlin’s type system can unlock powerful libraries and how you can apply functional programming principles without getting lost in category theory. You will get to know different forms of concurrency besides coroutines and Project Loom and how Kotlin can integrate lessons from experiments in the Scala world. With this, you will see how Scala keeps pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, and what you should look forward to in Kotlin.
Things you will learn in this lecture:
- why Kotlin looks the way it does, and how that relates to Scala and Java
- how FP in Kotlin can be both pure, safe, pragmatic and intellectually fun at the same time, inspired by Scala
- new Scala features, and what Kotlin can steal for maximum benefit to the community
